MODERN  NET-ZERO
Net Zero Building
The Modern Elegance of Sustainable Functionality...
This alternate Net-Zero design has a roof that is creased from corner to corner, with half bent to accommodate solar panels facing due south while at the same time providing a distinct sloping roof valley that drains all rainwater to the tank at the SE corner of the building. This unique roof shape is, therefore, the direct result of its sustainable functionality. On the inside of the building, each rafter changes slightly as they occur down the length of the building creating a dynamic large-scale gesture across the entire space. The layout of the interior utilizes various movable panels (folding, pivoting, rolling, and/or sliding) to maximize flexibility while creating an interactive interior architecture that echoes the adjustability of the exterior envelope and maintaining an open feel. The strategic use of mirrors on interior walls also helps pull the outside environment in across the space, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior.

The use of materials on this structure is a modern application of the materials from the other house. The roof is the same galvalume finish standing seam, and it has a basement clad in stone masonry veneer. Light colored wood siding, in addition to various vertical gestures on the facade (vertical reveals, tall windows/louvers, columns, and metal siding) reference the distinct vertical character of a north Florida pine forest. Another note: the large ledge at the west and south perimeter edges of the outdoor deck can serve as built-in planters for decorative plants, flowers, vegetables, etc., adding a soft transition to the nature just beyond.
Small openings to the south offer screened views through fully adjustable louvers, while shading from direct harsh southern sunlight in the warmer months. To the north, larger openings allow plenty of soft northern light to fill the interior. Louvers protecting the outdoor deck can be made to partially or fully open, permitting complete control of the amount and quality of light coming onto the deck and into the western space. This should provide light for all but task lighting needs regularly.
